Family photo: Klawitter Family Homestead, early 1900s
Family photo, Steger
From John Klawitter:
"Did you know that my grandfather, Robert Reinhold Klawitter built the house just down the street from you at 3004 Chicago road, hand built by himself in 1906 from blueprints he bought from the Sears & Roebucks Catalog? ... When they widened Chicago Road (then also called "Dixie Highway", the house sadly lost it's front porch and all the gingerbread. And in the 1950's my dad John Emil "Jack" Klawitter lowered all the ceilings on the ground floor. The property used to have a barn and a big chicken coop, back in the late 1940s when I was ten years or so old.
"While on the subject, did you know 3004 was said to be haunted by a friendly elderly gentleman we all assumed to be my grandfather? There was a workman doing some repairs for my brother's family and my mom, who lived there at the time. When the workman came down the stairs he wanted to know who the friendly old fellow sitting on the steps was. Of course, that was my grandpa's favorite spot...he had built that house with a secret compartment where he kept a bottle of whiskey."
